Listen While You Internet

That's me reading the opening paragraph of my book, You Are Among Friends: Advice for the Little Sisters I Never Had.

Or, first, try the podcast (below) for free, and see if you're into it!

THE PODCAST

You Are Among Friends is a project that encourages and empowers girls of all ages. It began as a paper zine, then took the form of a free audio podcast, and (in extended form) is now in the shiny, tangible form of a beautiful little book.

Right-click the photo above to download the podcast, which is still free for listening and distribution.

thanks, lulu!

Hey buddies,

I got an email from Lulu (the company that prints my book of feminist-leaning advice for girls) yesterday that said they'd recently fixed a bug that was causing a delay in the search results for my book. As penance, they're offering a coupon code for 15% off (spoiler alert: the book is only $7.99 to begin with, so that makes it pretty damn cheap!):

This is quite an opportune time to recommend the book to that girl you know who could use some encouragement, or to pick up a copy for yourself and see what it's all about...

you sweethearts.

In the spirit of my post about Conan the other day, I wanted to make a little video that pays tribute to all the people who support You Are Among Friends. After the book started selling in December, this adorable trend started to emerge of people posting photos of themselves holding their books, and obviously I can't get enough of it.

I hope that when a person reads the book, he or she feels like an important part of a community, one that's smart and positive, because that community exists, and I've seen it through all of you over the past couple years. All the people who bought books for sisters and cousins and daughters last Christmas, and all the people who say hi or thank you, everyone who bought the zine or downloaded the podcast or put up a link or e-mailed your friends: thank you. I do not say that enough. But it's unbelievable to me every single day how positive and kind the response to the project has been.

Like it sez in the book's afterword: "This is for you. You made it happen. It would not exist without you, because it is you."

I love y'all.

ETA: OH YEAH, AND! I have a code for 10% off the book, in case you've been waiting for the perfect time to strike (when you could get, uh, 10% off of $9.99...you deal hound, you) -- through January 31st, enter READMORE2010 at checkout. Unless you have not yet donated at least $9.99 to relief efforts in Haiti, in which case I would merely like to suggest that you use your cash that way first: hopeforhaitinow.org.

Special Delivery.

I have to confess something I've been keeping from you, internet.

Maybe I've come across as a cool-as-hell cucumber, but my brain has been Woody-Allening out all week.

One strange and anxiety-inducing thing about printing the book through a Print on Demand service is that I don't see any sample copies of it before it's, you know, put out into the public eye for the whole world to touch and examine. Besides the worries over errors I could have prevented myself (typos, omissions)--what if the colors translated wrong and Nicole's amazing cover was misrepresented? What if the pages printed wonky or felt cheap? What if the finished product was something I didn't love?

Well, internet. A box arrived on the front porch this morning. I took the liberty of opening it for you.

HOO-RAY. And phew, I must say.

The past few days have been incredible. I promise to be more coherent soon, but in lieu of my own coherency, I give you some things other people have been saying...

What a great stocking stuffer for the young ladies in your life! Give them a guidebook, an advice column, a humorous manifesto of how extraordinary they are. I promise Linds will deliver the goods in a way that makes them sit up and think, without condescension. She is damn good at that.

--Katy Jones, dirty hems

im not much for being serious. but seriously, lindsey’s writing, and ideas, have more honesty and love in them than most of us could ever hope.

--Josh Lucas, The Pod Collective

I don’t have a little sister but I bought this book right away. I’ve known Lindsey online for a few years and she is truly one of the most intelligent, warm, funny, courageous people around. I honestly believe this book can inspire not just little sisters, but people of all ages.

--Samantha Garner, skgarner.com

YAAF is honest, practical advice for girls of every age, and a huge force of positivity. There are no cheers of “GIRL POWER!” here. This isn’t feminism-lite. What you’ll find is a frank yet comforting discussion of the seemingly taboo that never sounds icky or text book. It cheers you on without ever being cheesy.
